Freedom From Religion group protests back-to-school worship service at Alabama high school – WSB Atlanta

RAINSVILLE, Ala. – An attorney for the Freedom From Religion Foundation said an Alabama high school violated the separation of church of state by promoting a back-to-school service in the gymnasium, AL.com reported.

In a letter addressed to DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Jason Barnett, Freedom From Religion Foundation objected to Sunday’s scheduled “Back to School Worship Service” at Fyffe High School, the website reported.

The service is scheduled for 6 p.m. and was posted on the school’s Facebook page.

“Please join us in praying for God’s protective hand to be over our schools, facilities, and students,” the post reads.

Foundation officials said in their letter, written by attorney Christopher Line, that they learned about the event from “a concerned DeKalb County Schools parent.”

“We write to ensure that DeKalb County does not allow its employees to organize or participate in religious events while acting as district representatives,” Line wrote.

Officials from Fyffe High School have not responded to a request for comment, AL.com reported.
